Several years ago, there was a poll taken to see which city in the United States had the most restaurants and fast food establishments. It was conducted due to the increase of juvenile obesity escalating to a critical level. It really doesn't matter which city won, what does matter is that there were so many food places that it would take an individual almost a year to dine at each one! What really made this hit home was that the poll was covering lunch and dinner at different locations.

We have finally realized how important not only what we eat is, but also how it is prepared. Unfortunately, we still have ways to go, especially since healthy food can be more than twice as expensive as junk food, and with unemployment up and the economy down, many families just do not have the choice to buy healthy.

For many of us, the picture of a nutritionist brings back memories of the cafeteria lady dishing out what we used to call "mystery meat," and let's not forget her very attractive hairnet! Thankfully, all of that has changed, and now a person with a degree in nutrition is respected and in high demand.

Choosing this profession can lead to a rewarding career with many challenges, plus opportunities for growth and advancement. Furthermore, since the new computer technology has made it possible to enroll into an online degree program in which we can go back to school from the convenience of our living rooms, deciding to earn a degree in nutrition is definitely a win-win situation!

You can start with an Associate's degree, which is called a Dietetic Technician (DT) degree. Just be advised to only enter a program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE), which will then extend your status to a Dietetic Technician Registered or DTR. You will be able enter the workforce in such locations as a hospital, school, fitness center, community health department, or a nonprofit agency such as WIC (Women Infant and Children's program).

In order to become a nutritionist, you will need at least a Bachelor's degree, which can also be achieved online; however, depending upon the program, you might be required to complete an internship in a local school or facility in order to graduate. The curriculum can include a wide range of topics, starting with the basic anatomy and physiology classes. You will also receive instruction in infectious diseases, nutrition science, biology, biochemistry, genetics, and ethics, just to mention a few.

As a nutritionist, you will be able to decide what specialty field is right for you. The possibilities of settings or locations could be as a clinical nutritionist working in a hospital, or even a sports nutritionist who works with athletes to help them maintain their fitness levels through individualized diets, depending upon the sport or activity.

Since we have finally realized that we need to be more aware of what we eat, how we cook for our families, and how this can determine our overall well-being and future health issues, deciding to earn a degree in this field is a wonderful career choice. It could lead to a research position, which in turn, could help find successful treatments for individuals who are obese and have health issues directly linked to this problem. Start today by signing up for your first nutrition class, and before you know it, you will have earned your university degree!
